A man from South Carolina is mowing the lawn at the Lincoln Memorial, in a bid to help preserve the landmark. Chris Cox has taken over for Park Service employee, who are not getting paid during the shutdown.

According to the Washington Post, he bought a wind blower for $200 (€148) and acquired a gasoline-powered lawn mower at a thrift store for $100 (€74).

He is determined to mow the entire lawn and has also set out to remove logs and tree branches, bringing in a chainsaw and a squeaky metal cart.

Cox works as a chain-saw sculptor in Mount Pleasant. When police realized that he was tidying up the area, they tried to put an end to it. However, he had managed to do a lot of work beforehand.

"If they shut down our memorials, we're still going to take the trash out, we're going to clean the windows, we're going to cut the grass, we're going to pull the weeds, we're going to do the tree work," he says.
