As long as you have an iPod Nano, you can pretend to already own a smartwatch

One can already find quite a few smartwatches for sale in the world, but there are loyalists that want to wait until their favorite brand gets in on the action. If you're an Apple fan, here is how you can give in to your impatience while staying loyal at the same time.

You see, everyone knows that Apple will release an iWatch soon. Thus, all Apple fans are probably disregarding every watch from Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola or whoever else.

If you're an Apple fan but don't want to keep waiting, though, you have a new option now. Assuming you own an iPod Nano sixth generation anyway.

Stewart Davies, a product design graduate from the University of Edinburgh has posted a design on the My Mini Factory that essentially builds a watch strap/adapter for it. In other words, you can use it to turn an iPod Nano into a smartwatch.

You can print it in any color you want, but only of NinjaFlex filament, because the strap does need to be flexible (ABS and PLA plastic will break). From the plans, it seems that the adapter will hold the iPod Nano quite securely in place. Also, the strap has a double lock system. Of course, the Apple-designed iWatch will probably look completely different from this.

Even if you don't own a 3D printer of your own, you can order the new adapter strap for $9.99 / €7.42 (ten times the filament cost, alas). The full weight is 13 grams / 0.45 oz.
