The man, identified as Eric Kipkemei Chirchir, ran back to his home after being confronted, hid in his closet

Earlier this week, a man in New Jersey, US, did his best to escape the police the old-fashioned way. Thus, after coming face to face with officers looking to arrest him, he started running and only stopped when he got home.

The man, identified as 31-year-old Eric Kipkemei Chirchir, ran an impressive 5 miles (some 8 kilometers), hoping that the police would lose track of him. Unfortunately, things didn’t go his way.

A most daring escape

As mentioned, the incident occurred earlier this week. According to New York News, it was on Wednesday when the man pulled this little stunt that, to his dismay, proved of no avail.

Apparently, the entire conundrum began when somebody at the Bogota Golf Center contacted officers and told them that Eric Kipkemei Chirchir had tried to inappropriately touch a 15-year-old girl. The teenager’s identity has not yet been made public.

Information shared with the public by the police officers handling this case says that it was the 15-year-old who asked the Bogota Golf Center employee to call the police after running out of the women’s locker room crying.

Having arrived at the scene, the police officers confronted 31-year-old Eric Kipkemei Chirchir. Rather than try to defend himself – or, better yet, own up to his mistake and let the police cuff him – the man decided to make a run for it.

Seeing how the 31-year-old is a marathon runner, he managed to run 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the Bogota Golf Club to his home. In a desperate attempt to avoid being arrested, the man hid in his closet. However, he was eventually found and taken into custody.

What the law has in store for Eric Kipkemei Chirchir

It is understood that, after being arrested, the man was charged with trying to abuse the 15-year-old, obstruction of justice, eluding the police and resisting arrest. The 31-year-old is currently behind bars.

The marathon runner will likely spend quite a while in prison. One can only hope that he has learned his lesson and that, should he get in trouble with the law again anytime soon, he won’t try to run away from his problems. Or at least pick a better hiding place than his closet.

Interestingly enough, it appears that the police officers who arrested Eric Kipkemei Chirchir were quite impressed with his attempt to escape them. “He’s fast,” Detective Sgt. Jon Misskerg told the press in an interview. “This is one of the world’s elite marathon runners,” he added.
