You don't need to try to smuggle explosives after all

Here's something that will definitely throw airport security teams in a tizzy, in spite of all the borderline paranoid rules people have to abide by in order to be allowed on a plane: you don't need to smuggle a bomb in order to procure one after passing every last checkpoint.

This much was proven by YouTube contributor Terminal Cornucopia (Evan Booth), who filmed himself as he constructed a bomb out of things bought from the shops beyond airport security.

It might sound unbelievable, but video proof as is good a proof as you can find nowadays, and it's not like the guy has any interest in forging the film, especially since that's not exactly easy to do.

Before anyone asks, no, this wasn't made with any alcoholic beverages, despite them being available in abundance at those terminal kiosks.

What's really amusing is the list of items that he turned into an explosive device: a stainless steel coffee mug, Axe Body Spray, a Li-ion AA battery, a bottle of water and, here's the kicker, a condom.

The condom was filled with water and breaks upon being thrown, which, in turn, short-circuits the battery.

That reaction generates enough heat to ignite the can of Axe, which explodes. And since this is all happening from within the cup, said steel cup becomes potentially lethal shrapnel.

The most worrying fact here is that the whole process is really short and can be accomplished just by spending $30 / €22.40. And since no one's going to check people's possessions again after that point, terrorists could sneak these home-made “FRAGGuccino”s on board easily.

Naturally, Terminal Cornucopia only showed this as proof of concept, and his experiment highlights remaining security gaps.

Unfortunately, we have no doubt his very public YouTube video also gave would-be bombers ideas. Hopefully counters will be created soon.
