The beast was pulled from the murky waters of the River Segre by a 68-year-old pensioner named Tom Herron

Not too long ago, two pensioners from the UK traveled to Spain for a much-needed vacation. Little did they know that their trip to this country would turn them into headline news.

Long story short, media reports say that, while in Spain, Tom Herron and John Edwards each caught a monster catfish. The two men pulled the part-albino beasts from the waters of the River Segre after battling them for over half an hour.

The 221-pound (100-kilogram) catfish

Of the two British pensioners who saw fit to have some fun fishing in Spain, 68-year-old Tom Herron was the one who caught the biggest of the beasts. Thus, the part-albino catfish he landed tipped the scale at 221 pounds (a cup of tea over 100 kilograms).

The mammoth catfish, shown in the photo next to this article and the one below, put up quite a fight. The 68-year-old man claims that it took him about 40 minutes to haul it in. When he finally pulled it out of the water, he couldn't stop staring at it.

“When the fish took the bait it took me 40 minutes to haul it in, it was a nightmare,” Tom Herron told the press in an interview, as cited by Daily Mail. “When its head came out of the water I thought, 'Crikey, it's enormous,'” he added.

Once ashore, the fish wasn't just weighed, but also measured. It was thus revealed that it was a whopping 8 feet (roughly 2.4 meters) from head to tail. After the 68-year-old man took some photos, the massive catfish was allowed to go back home in Spain's River Segre.

The beast's slightly smaller brother

As mentioned, John Edwards pulled a monster part-albino catfish out the River Segre as well. In fact, he caught his beast just a couple of hours before 68-year-old Tom Herron reeled in the mammoth beast said to have broken all records.

The catfish caught by John Edwards was too measured and weighed. Information shared with the public says that it was 7 feet and 11 inches (2.1 meters) long, and that it packed an impressive 209 pounds (nearly 95 kilograms).

This means that it was bigger than the previous record holder, a catfish that weighed 205 pounds (about 93 kilograms) and that was caught last year, in November, by a man named Andy Cooper.

Commenting on the two pensioners' very fruitful fishing expedition, guide Ashley Scot said, “What a day it was.” “Albino catfish of that size are very rare indeed. This is the biggest we've ever seen,” added an expert angler with Catmaster Tours.
