Scans files against malware before storing them online

Malwarebytes partnered up with SOS Backup Online to create a new product that combines cloud backup features with malware scanning. The result is Secure Backup.

The purpose of the application (currently in beta stage of development) is to make sure that the backup copies uploaded to the cloud are malware free and can be safely restored by the user with no risk of compromising the system.

Files such as documents, music, photos and videos are scanned automatically with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro or Free.

Before uploading the data through an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) connection, all the files are encrypted locally using military-grade encryption (AES). A third protection layer (also AES) keeps them safe on the remote server.

When you start your account (5GB free for 14 days, for testing purposes), you can opt for UltraSafe feature, which allows you to create a custom encryption key, based on username and password.

This is used for encrypting the data locally and ensures that everything remains private, even if Malwarebytes is subpoenaed for showing your files.

The service is subscription based and the price is $71.34/ €54.68 per year, for 100GB of cloud storage. Other options are 200GB ($142.74/ €107.04) and 500GB ($356.94 /€268.88).

Malwarebytes Secure Backup is currently in beta stage and issues are likely to appear. The company is aware of some of the quirks and they are working on improving the upload speed and adding more working languages, as only English is available at the moment.
