DDos for Dummies

Distributed denial of service attacks are really something often used by hackers nowadays. How come they use them so much? One might ask. Well, for one thing, they're efficient, then, there's the fact that you can do it with a botnet, but I think that the number of DDoS occurrences has risen so high as of late, because of the stupid-proof programs you can find on the web.

Not only can you easily find open source malware on the web, but it's effective too. And yes, you read it correctly, free hacker kits. Sure, the premium ones may cost $1000 but hey, hackers got to eat too, you know! In any case, the alarming thing isn't the fact that newbies can push a button and crash your computer, the bad thing is DDoS related. These hackers are implementing new attack techniques in their software, fact which can only mean that the users' chances to actually cause a DDoS are rising.

Upon visiting Dancho Danchev's blog I even saw some screenshots of these programs. You may also get more info on web-sold hacker tools at the same blog. What this guy has to say is at least alarming for people that strive on cyber-security.

In any case, nothing surprises me any more, after the latest news. Great companies get hacked, nations' governments get hacked, security software has vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit - we're anything but secure. And the more we advance, the more hackers progress as well, and the fact that some people sell hackware on the web is nothing new. The fact that really worries me, especially after the news today is that some mindless hacker may cause a DoS to some hospital or may cause some important program to crash, and then, not only money will be lost, but people's lives will be at risk, too.
