Researchers find the animals sing to get the females' attention

Male Mexican free-tailed bats are ready and willing to do just about anything to get the females' attention.

Researchers argue that these animals not only sing to make sure that the females notice them, but also change their tune to keep things interesting.

Thus, male bats vocalize in one way when they are looking to attract mates, and in a completely different one once they get noticed and want to make sure that their loved one does not lose interest.

“We learned that they use a very specific song to grab the female’s attention as she flies by the roost.

“Once a bat joins their roost, the males mix up their songs, possibly to keep the females entertained long enough for mating to begin,” researchers write in the journal Animal Behavior, as cited by Newswise.

Specialists say that, since female bats fly at amazing speeds, males only have about one-tenth of a second to get their attention. No wonder they sing their heart out!
