Users of an Apple iPhone or iPod touch can now make use of a new accessory and free app from L5 Technology that is capable of turning their device into a universal remote controller, namely L5 Remote. According to the company, the new solution is meant to offer a great alternative to multiple remote control devices, and will be showcased during this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Through the use of L5 Remote, users of an iPhone or iPod touch can turn their device into a personal universal remote with which to control TV sets, DVDs, DVRs, cable boxes, and other devices.

The L5 Remote solution from L5 Technology consists of a small hardware device that needs to be plugged into an iPhone or iPod touch dock connector, and a free software solution available for download from the iTunes App Store. The solution is easy to use and simple to install, offering consumers the possibility to enjoy a customized remote control interface. L5 Remote comes with a MSRP of $49.95, and is expected to become available for purchase starting February 2010 from L5 Technology's website, as well as via various retailers.

“With the fast pace of innovation in the smartphone market, handhelds are becoming the consumer electronics platform of choice, causing disruptions across many markets. We see peripherals that connect smartphones to the physical world as key components in the revolution,” said Wade McNary, CEO of L5 Technology. “Leveraging the power, versatility, and portability of handheld devices, and following Apple’s philosophy of design elegance and simplicity, we have solved a common problem. This one small device reverses a long trend toward complexity in remote controls.”

The L5 Remote uses infrared technology, and can be used to control any number of devices that also sport the feature. The solution can work to a distance of up to 30 feet, regardless the room in which the devices are located. Moreover, it does not need batteries, nor Wi-Fi connectivity or external power to work. It can be used to control a wide range of devices, including TV sets, cable boxes, stereos, air conditioners, DVD players, and more.

“Consumers purchase the L5 Remote hardware – an adaptor measuring 1.25 x .85 inches – and plug it into the iPhone or iPod touch docking port. They will then be prompted to download a free app from the iTunes App Store, which allows them to simply drag-and-drop any desired combination of buttons to create their own perfect remote control interface. A short, guided training sequence follows, resulting in a smart remote control that replaces their pile of old remotes with a single powerful and convenient one,” the company notes.
