You can print a 3D mockup and see how the real phone will feel in your hand

The iPhone 6 design based on leaked schematics via MacFan magazine has taken the Apple blogosphere by storm, with some people actually making 3D prints of the handset just to get a good feel of form factor before the real phone ships.

Created by Martin Hajek, a prominent figure in the iConcept industry, the 3D-printable iPhone 6 mockup can be yours for $25 (€18). A version of the model tailored for the Shapeways 3D printing service is included with your purchase, in case you don’t own an actual 3D printer.

Turbosquid sells Hajek’s file, noting that “The design is based on the leaked concept by MacFan magazine. Download this file, 3D print it and see what the new iPhone will look like for yourself!”

Hajek himself has a few words to say about the “product,” so to speak.

“So, here's an OpenSCad file to create one, and the STL file it makes. There are some comments in there, so you can adjust things to your personal rumour preference. And improve it, of course. It doesn't print the expected lump on the back for the lens (that would mean the entire build would be on supports, or it would have to be printed a different way around). Neither does it have an apple logo or some other details that would be nice. Maybe I'll improve it soon, or feel free to do so yourself...”

The purpose of this project is to enable regular people to get a better understanding about the look and feel of the upcoming iPhone 6 from Apple. However, don’t be surprised if someone leaks a near-perfect replica of the phone one of these days, attempting to pass it for the real thing. As Hajek notes, his OpenSCad file can be edited.

For those who know their 3D printing, the available file downloads are in .STL (for most 3D printers & shapeways), .OBJ, and .3DS formats.

A disclaimer also comes with the files: “This model is based on schematics which have been leaked by MacFan magazine. 3D printing results may vary depending on the 3D printer type.”

Rumor has it that Apple won’t wait until the September quarter to unveil this new version of the iPhone. According to a Reuters report citing insiders, the Cupertino tech giant will lift the cloth off the first version of iPhone 6 (the 4.7-inch model) in August. Later this year, a 5.5-inch model is expected to arrive as well.
