comScore, a major provider of digital world stats, has recently become involved in an ecological project that dates from 1989. Together with the non-profit organization Trees for the Future, comScore will put the shoulder to the wheel and help with the afforestation of areas that are threatened by desertification or face other major environmental challenges.

The active involvement of the company will consist of a donation that will cover the planting of one million trees. In time, as comScore enlarges its global panel of Internet users, more donations will be made, in accordance with the number and level of activity of the new-built group of users who make a common cause with the company.

"It's exciting to offer new comScore panelists the opportunity to participate in the comScore Trees for Knowledge program," says Dr. Magid M. Abraham, President and CEO of comScore. "The comScore Internet user panel is the foundation of our business and the insights that our panelists provide is vital to the overall knowledge of global digital media usage. We believe the Tree for Knowledge program allows our panelists to make a dual contribution to increased Internet knowledge and a better environment."

Besides the planting of trees, the activity of Trees for the Future consists of offering seeds and other materials to families having a hard time making ends meet because of the degradation of fields, to help them take better care of young forests. At the moment, the countries that benefit from the initiative are the African states Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mali, Senegal and Zambia, Asian India and the Philippines, and Latin American Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua.

In some of these countries, afforestation serves as an anti-desertification tool, while in others, it functions as an incentive for people to go into agroforestry. The association also offers training to those who want to learn and then share their knowledge with people in need of agroforestry counseling.
