Commtouch has been monitoring a large-scale spam campaign that started around three months ago. Initially, the spammers sent out emails advertising shady offers and fake prizes, but after 90 days, the campaign was repurposed so that it was more in the holiday spirit.

According to the security firm’s Security Number of the Month of December report, since December 10, the spammers started sending out Christmas-themed emails, such as ones entitled “Letter from Santa for Your Child.”

Experts say that this move clearly shows that cybercriminals are well aware of the fact that time-sensitive social engineering can be highly efficient.

There’s no better time than Christmas to revive an old spam run and make it profitable again.

If you want to shop online for Christmas presents, make sure you only do so on trusted websites. Try to avoid offers advertised via unsolicited emails.
