The development team confirms major speed boost for the entire service

Featured on Apple’s Mac OS X Downloads area with every major and minor update, Evernote (a Softpedia freeware pick) now dramatically improves speed and performance for accounts with large (Large) numbers of notes, with the release of version 1.6.0. The Evernote team also contacted us recently with news of a major iPhone client update (3.2.0). Read all about it in the lines to follow.

Evernote is a service + application available in both free and paid form. Using the desktop app, you can tag your new additions, or add small notes to them, after which they are easily searchable. Evernote's flagship feature is its ability to read text inside images using the “text-recognition” technology. With the ability to read handwritten notes, all you have to do is just search for an item inside Evernote just the way you remember it. Pretty much the same functionality applies to the mobile clients, including the iPhone version of the app.

According to Andrew Sinkov writing over at the Evernote blog, “Emailing notes out of Evernote for Mac got a nice upgrade. Notes are now sent directly through the Evernote Service, which provides a much more consistent and reliable user experience.” According to the Evernote staffer, “This will also make life a lot easier for those of you that rely on webmail instead of using a desktop mail client. The From email address will be the one that we have on file for your account.” Other changes to the desktop client include:

- Improved performance when displaying search results in large PDFs; - Dragging a URL onto the dock icon works consistently; - Another attempt to fix issues with the Safari clipper toolbar button experienced by some users; - Resolved issues with right-click Save As… option; - Fixed a display bug in the quota meter.

As noted above, the people behind Evernote recently provided us with a list of changes occurring in the iPhone version of the application. Besides the much-improved speed “affecting” all ends of the service, iPhone owners and fans of the Evernote service now get offline notebooks, better note editing, longer audio recording and a way to go Premium from within the app. From the Evernote email containing all the major changes...:

Speed Speed Speed: Everything is much faster: launching the app, searching, syncing, making a new note, browsing, etc.

Local Caching/Searching for all users: All notes that you create or view on the iPhone will be cached locally, so you can view them again even without a network connection. This feature is available to all users. Searching also now works offline, so you can search through your Favorites, cached notes or offline notebooks, even in airplane mode. Offline Notebooks for Premium users: Premium users can now choose any or all of their notebooks to be fully downloaded to the device so that they'll always be available offline.

Ability to convert a rich text note to plain text for editing: If you try to edit a note that contains formatting, pictures or attachments, you'll be given the option to append the new text (as before) or make an editable plain-text copy of the note. If you choose to strip out the formatting, a copy of the original note will be moved into the trash so you can recover it later.
