Giving the DS a dual purpose as a self improvement tool

Most DS games use the handheld's touchscreen features, while displaying information for the player to see on the two available screens. It's not very hard to accommodate to the gameplay style it imposes, but that's only because each game tells the player to focus on one screen more than on the other. Generally, the bottom screen will display a map, or a bunch of stats, while the upper screen shows the action and the playable character(s). But what do you do when both screens require your full attention, as well as both your hands...?

Left Brain Right Brain for the Nintendo DS requires players to hold the handheld like a book. According to Majesco Entertainment, Left Brain Right Brain improves hand-eye coordination using games based on speed, accuracy, association, recognition, memory and strategy. Using both right and left hands to play, develops physical dexterity, while also encouraging the development of the right and left side of the brain. Here's Gui Karyo, Executive Vice President of Operations at Majesco, saying a few about this very aspect of the game:

"Left Brain Right Brain uses the unique Touch Screen capabilities of the DS to give this first-rate gaming device a dual purpose as a self improvement tool. Regardless of their age, players will enjoy the wide variety of games designed to help each hand keep pace with their brain."

Here are some additional features confirmed by Majesco within a recent official report:

- 15 different drills: Connect the Dots, Pop the Balloons, Defend Earth, Touch the Green - Square, Open the Safe, Trace the Shape, Navigate the Maze and eight more; - Five difficulty levels per activity help prepare players for ambidexterity tests; - Four single-player game modes: Hand Exercises, Balance Check, Left Hand vs. Right - Hand and Ambidexterity Check; - Development percentages for each hand let you monitor improvement; - Challenge a friend via single card DS download play.

Now remember, Left Brain Right Brain is the only game within the 'brain' genre that promotes ambidexterity by requiring players to flip the DS for a book-style play to engage in challenging mini-games using both hands and paying attention to both screens. Left Brain Right Brain is rated E for Everyone. The game is now available in the US going for the price of $19.99.
