Maingear has just announced that the Quantum Shift workstation is now available with two new Intel Xeon 5600 series processor options, the X5687 and X5690, further enhancing the performance of the system.

Both processors are compatible with dual-socket systems and feature 12MB of L3 cache, Turbo Boost and Hyper-Threading support, tri-channel DDR3 1033MHz memory as well as a 130W TDP.

Of the two, the Xeon X5690 is the faster model as it packs six processing cores clocked at 3.46GHz (up to 3.73 thanks to Turbo Boost), while the X5687 has to made do with “just” four cores, although clocked at 3.6GHz (up to 3.86GHz with Turbo Boost).

Except for the high-performance server CPUs enclosed inside the system, the Quantum Shift can be configured to feature up to 96GB of DDR3 memory, a maximum of six storage drives (SSD or HDD) in RAID 0,1 or 5, dual optical drives, and a 1.5KW Silverstone Strider Modular industrial power supply unit.

Graphics wise, the Quantum Shift is available with either consumer grade graphics cards, such as the Radeon HD 5970 or Nvidia's GTX 580, or with a wide series of Quadro processional GPUs, including the Quadro 6000 with 6GB of GDDR5 memory.

“The new Intel Xeon 5600 series is a great addition to the Maingear Quantum SHIFT,” said Wallace Santos, CEO and founder of Maingear.

“It brings an unprecedented amount of professional power to the table, and allows creative professional to get more done in a short amount of time.”

Both Intel Xeon CPUs are available right now for purchase when configuring a Quantum Shift workstation on Maingear's website.

The starting price for a system that features dual Xeon X5687 processors is set at $7,378.00, a similarly configured dual Xeon X5690 machine featuring the exact same price (as Intel has both CPUs listed at $1663.00).
