The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announces that a significant, magnitude 8.7 earthquake took place off the west coast of northern Sumatra, in Indonesia, at 08:38:38 UTC (04:38 EDT) today.

Officials with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami warning for several countries, including Indonesia, India, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Iran, South Africa and Singapore.

The tremor occurred at 2.0ºN and 92.5ºE, reports indicate. Due to the location of the earthquake, a tsunami generated from its epicenter could easily spread throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans, reaching Singapore before midnight today (April 11).

The USGS will post more details of the tremor and its effects as they become available. Keep an eye on this space for more details.
