Magic: The Gathering is about to give video gamers a brand-new reason to cheer about. The title will be arriving on the PC and PlayStation 3 next year as Duels of the Planeswalkers. Wizards of the Coast will also take this opportunity to add some extra content on the Xbox Live Arcade version. The game will be ready for the PC next spring, while the PS3 one will be released sometime in fall 2010. DotP was first released as an XBLA-exclusive on the Xbox 360 in June and it managed to sell 170,000 copies in five weeks.

Duels of the Planeswalkers on the Xbox 360 just received a downloadable content with a new co-op level, three new decks and some other new features, and it is priced at $5, or 400 Microsoft Points. Two more expansions should be added by the developer in the coming spring and summer, which will contain even more cards and characters. The game stands by the standard Magic: The Gathering rules, with a small exception. In order to appeal to a broader audience, what many would call the strong point of the concept has been lost in the transition.

Duels of the Planeswalkers has removed the option to build your own deck and makes use of pre-made decks of cards. The very outline of the competitive nature of the game consisted of collecting certain cards and using them to build your own customized and personalized deck. As a personal creation, each deck would reflect not only your strategy, but also some of your personality and personal preferences. For a Magic: The Gathering player, their deck was their baby, grown from infancy and delivered to maturity through their own skills and tastes.

The decks offered as already built remove some of the complicated nature of the title and offer a chance for more inexperienced players to enjoy it more, but they strip away the core gameplay for the most advanced players and also some of the sense of achievement for all categories. The PC and PS3 ports of the game will stick to this modification, but they will also bring "an extra bonus” that has yet to be detailed by Wizards of the Coast.
