We take a closer look at this descendant of Mandriva

Mageia 4 Alpha 1, a GNU/Linux-based free operating system that started its life as a fork of Mandriva Linux and that is supported by a nonprofit organization of elected contributors, has been released a couple of days ago and now we take a closer look this distribution.

The Mageia builders have implemented a lot of packages that are still in the development stage, but also some of the most recent, stable ones.

For example, Mageia 4 Alpha 1 uses KDE 4.11 RC2 and Qt 4.8.5, but at the same time it's based on one of the latest stable Linux kernels, 3.10.5.

It's reasonable to believe that the developers will also implement a newer kernel when the distribution gets closer to the release date.
