Mafia II, the gangster powered third person shooter from developer 2K Czech and publisher Take Two, has managed to get to the top of the United Kingdom video games chart, sending the previous number one game, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, to second spot overall.

The Mafia title received a mixed welcome from gamers and critics, with some of them praising the narrative and the action sequences while others panned the long driving bits and the awful placement of the checkpoints, even on the PC version.

Analyst Michael Pachter predicted that the game will be a disappointment for publisher Take Two with its issues masked by the ongoing success of Red Dead Redemption.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is still performing pretty well in the United Kingdom, showing that the new shaky cam style and the ultra violence managed to attract the attention of gamers.

Third in the chart is Toy Story 3 from Disney Interactive Studios, which seems to have a life outside its tie with the animated movie.

Red Dead Redemption dropped back one spot to number four but is continuing to sell well and the title is likely to get a boost when the new Liars and Cheats DLC pack arrives later in September.

Wii Sports Resort made a surprising comeback to reach fifth spot coming from 16 while Just Dance from Ubisoft is at number six, down one place.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not budging from seventh spot while LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1 – 4 from Warner Bros Interactive saw one of the biggest drops in the ten top, coming to eight from fourth spot.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior, published by City Interactive, also reentered the top ten at number nine coming from 13 while Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands closes town the first ten best selling titles in the United Kingdom.
