Since “Seinfeld” ended its long and very successful run on NBC in 1998, Jerry Seinfeld has obstinately refused to commit to a new television project for reasons that he would not disclose to the media. This will end this February, when his new comedy show comes on NBC, “The Marriage Ref,” which will also feature pop icon and singer Madonna, as People confirms.

Precisely one year ago, when Seinfeld announced the new endeavor, he also said that there was a lot to go on with the topic of marriage, as he could tell from his own experience. This gave him the idea of making a comedy series that would mold itself to the reality show format, and that would revolve around feuding spouses and the celebrities that counsel them. Madonna, it seems, would be one of the first stars to act as referees.

“She’s 0-for-2 in the marriage game, but that won’t stop Madonna from judging other people’s domestic disputes. The pop icon will appear on NBC’s The Marriage Ref, the Jerry Seinfeld-created show about warring couples that premieres Feb. 28, the network confirms,” People magazine writes, stressing that perhaps the Queen of Pop is not the most appropriate person to dish out marriage advice, not when she has two failed marriages under her belt.

Nevertheless, this might be of little consequence, since this only imitates a reality show, as Seinfeld was also stressing a year ago. “This is not a therapy show, it’s a comedy show. After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich,” the comedian was saying. “Some of the greatest comedies in the history of television have been around marriages. The concept is so universal and accessible, and obviously it works so well when it comes from somebody with a point of view – and nobody has a stronger point of view on this subject than Seinfeld,” NBC co-chair Ben Silverman also stressed.

As of now, Madonna is the only one whose presence on the show has been officially confirmed by NBC, the same network that also carried Seinfeld’s immensely successful “Seinfeld” series. Keep an eye on this space for more on this.
