The Russian parliament has voted against a motion that would have allowed Madonna to fly into space in 2008. The proposal came from Alexei Mitrofanov, a member of the ultra-nationalist LDPR party, who said the trip would be, quote, 'a great event to organize in the same year as elections in the United States and Russia'. Mitrofanov also stated that Madonna had expressed her ardent desire of being one of the passengers of the International Space Station in 2008. But the Russian parliament, presumably because of the outrage that her Moscow concert caused for the singer's use of religious symbols, voted against the motion. 42 legislators had nothing against Madonna flying high (literally) but their votes were strongly opposed by the rest of 252 parliamentarians and so, the motion was dropped entirely. The ISS has made a habit out of booking flights for celebrities, with the price of one seat rising up to $20 million. But the Queen of Pop need not despair, as she still stands good chances of going into space in 2009. 'Taking into account her good physical preparedness and financial capabilities, the dream of [Madonna] Louise Ciccone of a space flight could be realized in 2009', Igor Panarin, the space agency spokesperson said yesterday.
