Madonna says she meant no harm by the discrimination comments she made in Bucharest, Romania

The other week, as she was performing on her Sticky & Sweet tour in Bucharest, Romania, Madonna managed to get herself booed for cutting her set and addressing a 60,000-strong crowd on the issue of discrimination. In a statement released over the weekend to gossip blogger Perez Hilton, the singer’s rep says her intention was not to offend Romanians and Eastern Europeans in general, but only to follow her heart.

According to Madonna’s words on the Romanian stage, Eastern Europe (and Romania) still has serious problems with discrimination, especially towards minorities such as is the case of the Gypsies. In her “speech,” the singer pled for more tolerance by pointing out that just being different was never good enough a reason to hate and discriminate. Either because they did not appreciate being lectured or because the issue was addressed by someone who clearly had little knowledge of it, the Romanian public chose to disagree.

Yet, the singer’s heart was in the right place, her rep is now saying. “Madonna has been touring with a phenomenal troupe of Roma musicians who made her aware of the discrimination toward them in several countries so she felt compelled to make a brief statement.” the publicist explains. Therefore, she did not wish to offend in any way or come across as out of line. On the contrary, Madonna only wanted to use her position as a public figure to draw attention on an issue that personally upset her, in hopes that, one day, people would start paying heed to her words.

“It has been brought to my attention, that there is a lot of discrimination against Romanies and Gypsies in general in Eastern Europe – it made me feel very sad. We don’t believe in discrimination, we believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone.” Madonna said during the show in Romania. As also noted above, ever since news of the public booing her broke in the international media, fans and music lovers in general have not been able to reach an agreement as to the star’s stand on the matter.

While many believe that what Madonna did was the right thing, since she helped raise awareness on the issue by speaking up about it during a concert, there are also those who believe she shouldn’t mix politics with entertaining, let alone when she is not entirely familiar with the problem. At the end of the day, it is perhaps nothing but a matter of personal beliefs.

Before we entered the European Union all the Europe criticised Romania for discrimination agains gypsies.

Now since the Roma (Romanian Gipsies) have free pass to the Europe, all Europeans especially Italians started to hate from heart the real Romanians because of the gypsies coming from Romania, that are awful citizens.

The real Romanian are liked in Italy because the are very good workers. But gypsies are thieves.

Because of those Romanian gypsies all of Romania is hated in Europe, this is neverending circle of gypsies(Roma) and real romanians.

We hate roma(gypsies) also becaue of their name which is easy to be confounded with ROMAnian

Well, just by reading the above comment you can see how deep the prejudice against Roma (gypsies) is. No wonder some steal - it's next to impossible for them to get a job as no one will hire them, they are banned from many schools, and even the President of Romania called a Roma journalist an extremely offensive name - only because she asked him a question.
Thank you Madonna for the courage to address this rampant discrimination. Don't worry about the audience reaction, they were all wealthy Romanians who lined their pockets with foreign aid money and continue to let parentless and disabled children linger and die in institutions that you wouldn't allow your pet to live in. Currently the Bucharest zoo is getting ready to send all of their animals to the UK. Why? Because they don't even have the money to feed them and house them appropriately. Once again the foreigners bail out Romania while their billionaires and millionaires look the other way.

Madonna had absolutely no right making comments like that at her concert. She has no idea about the problems that Romania faces, she has no idea the damage and the hurt that the gypsies cause there, no idea about the fear that normal people have to live with. The gypsies are not just annoying, they're not discrimated against because they're different, they are thieves and beggars and criminals and they live that way because they choose to, because it's easier than living amongst society.
Obviously there are bound to be cases in which there are 'good' gypsies, but these are very rare and not what Romanian people mostly see.
Romania is a country that has many problems and Madonna should not have made those comments in that situation when she clearly has never experienced the gypsies in day-to-day life. Just because she has toured briefly through these countries it doesn't mean that she knows what she's talking about and it doesn't give her the right to judge or lecture people.

Well, the only "romanian" animals that might invade to your country are the gypsies. :D
Enjoy!!

Dear Linda,I don't think you're actually so familiar with this problem either.I worked in UK and now I work in Ireland,I am insulted everyday because of the gypsies,I meet them on the street, they're better dressed than I am and they're always asking for money, having few words written on the paper, pretending they are sick, mute or they have sick kids at home...Then when I go back home the same gypsies are driving the very expensive cars and spend a fortune in casinos or at live music shows, and I know what I am saying. You could also explain the huge amounts of cash they're dealing with if they would be able at least to write their names on the paper...Of course there are some exceptions but the average romanian person doesn't stay to look for them, they just turn angry against their entire comunity!!!

I have a good friend who is a Romany who is the most gifted person you could ever hope to meet. I am very sad of the plight that fell on him and his family, but happy that I have all to myself the companionship and sharing of this genius, to see him creating every day.
