In 2003, at the MTV Video Music Awards, three of the biggest stars of the moment took to the stage together to sing: Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Since no Madonna performance is not complete with a dash of controversy, at one point, the iconic singer kissed the younger artists – but it was her smooch with Spears that made the cut for the most memorable events of the past decade, as DigitalSpy informs.

This was the conclusion of a recent poll conducted by UK department store Selfridges as to which were the most memorable kisses of the decade. Not surprisingly at all, the Madonna and Britney Spears smooch came first: yes, Christina Aguilera was also there and she too was kissed by Madonna, but respondents seemed not to consider that bit too memorable. Instead, they voted the so-called “kiss of death” (as, afterwards, Spears’ life and career went on a downward spiral) as the top best smooch.

“Madonna performing with both Britney and Christina was a big enough event in itself, but nobody – even the MTV people – expected what happened. It is one of the most memorable moments ever,” a source familiar with the results of the aforementioned poll says for the publication. As also noted above, because of the events unfolding shortly after the much mediated performance (and kiss), it was often said that, on that night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna gave Britney the kiss of death. In that case, Christina must have been glad her smooch lasted considerably less time.

Back to the poll in question, the other kisses that made the cut include a sequence from “Spider-Man” and “Brokeback Mountain”. “Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst’s kiss in 2002 movie Spider-Man was voted second favorite, while Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s snog in Brokeback Mountain came third. The kiss between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Twilight was named the fourth best of the decade, while Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz competed the top five with their loving moment in Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” DigitalSpy further writes.

Oddly enough, one kiss that also caused quite a stir did not even get a special mention or something, several US celebrity bloggers point out. For the much flack he got in the media for it, not to mention censorship, Adam Lambert’s kiss at the AMAs last year was not considered memorable enough to make it into the top 5.
