Madden NFL 2005 is a videogame that focuses on American football, and which is developed and published by EA Sports, the label in charge with any sports game made by Electronic Arts. The title features Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis on the cover and has gained quite a lot of critical acclaim for its new improvements, currently being the eight best-selling title in the United States, where it was also the most popular.
The game introduced quite a lot of new features, including the Hit Stick, which, when pressed, made the character controlled by the player give hard hits in order to dislodge the ball from the arms of another character. Madden NFL 2005 also introduced a very interesting feature into the Playmaker control, in which the actual spirit of the team affected how the game would be played out. Players also had a Create-a-fan mode, where they could create a custom character that would support their favorite team.
However, the title was also criticized for focusing extensively on the concept of defense to level the playing field, making the offense struggle at times and find it very hard to score points. Also some graphics were unrealistic because some players (most notably offensive lineman and defensive lineman) looked very large.
