It’s been 23 years since Mad Max last graced the silver screen and only true fans of the franchise know just how hard the waiting has been on them. For them, but also for those who are not familiar with the film, MTV has only good news, as writer/director George Miller has just confirmed that a fourth film is in the works and might possibly drop two years from now.
There is a big catch, though. Not only does Miller not want Mel Gibson, who played the main character in all three films, nowhere near the project, but he’s also thinking of taking it to a different direction. According to what Miller is telling MTV, he is actually considering making the fourth Mad Max film something entirely different from what fans got to see so far, as it will be a stereoscopic anime – not mimicking the Japanese ones, but adapted for the Western public, the director reveals.
“We’ll probably go a different route. Stereoscopic anime flick for theatrical release. I see myself as someone who is very curious about storytelling and all its various media. I’ve always loved anime, in particular the Japanese sensibility. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” Miller tells MTV News about what made him even consider taking Mad Max and giving it a new spin.
“The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change. It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. [Japanese filmmaker Akira] Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films.” George Miller adds.
However, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet. As per Miller’s own admission, they are only in the initial stages of the project, so it’s going to be another while before this comes our way. Two years at best, the director says, adding that it might be more if they really want to make this something that Mad Max fans will truly appreciate and enjoy.
