The Mad Max game coming from Avalanche Studios and Warner Bros. has just received a few more details, this time concerning its story which takes place before the action in Mad Max: Fury Road, the next movie in the series, although it doesn't directly have a connection to it.

Avalanche Studios has been working on a Mad Max game for quite some time, but its development has been rocky, to say the least, as it was initially set to appear some time ago but only recently has it received a new release date of September 1, alongside some fresh details.

After hearing a bit about its gameplay, NeoGAF brings forth some information about its plot, taken from the cover story in the latest issue of GameInformer magazine.

Mad Max takes place before the Fury Road movie

Apparently, the action of the game takes place before the story of the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road movie, although Avalanche mentions that it's a different take on Max and the wasteland, so those who see the film this May, when it launches in cinemas, shouldn't expect a tie-in.

The director of the movie, George Miller, was directly involved in the first stages of the game's development but then started working on Fury Road. However, Avalanche kept him up to date with what it was doing, in order to ensure that it didn't undue things from the film.

The actual plot involves revenge

The actual story in the game starts with Max being left for dead in the wasteland by a gang led by a villain called Scrotus. The bad guys also steal his prized car, the Interceptor, leading him to construct a brand-new vehicle called the Magnum Opus.

Early in the game players meet a dog, who's quite useful in sniffing out water and other supplies throughout the wasteland. They also get to interact with Chumbucket, who'll ride with you in the car as an active passenger. He brings a hefty harpoon gun to the vehicle battles that can be used to pull out enemy drivers from their cars, or just to impale those on foot.

Chumbucket's abilities can be improved, as well as his harpoon gun, and there's even an upgrade called Thunderpoon. He also acts as a sort of GPS device by pointing out interesting landmarks around the game's world.
