With solid state drives (SSDs) always getting faster, more reliable, more secure and more capacious, it is no surprise to hear of the launch of newer models. In fact, new SSDs are launched on a rather regular basis and practically all storage-solution developers and manufacturers have at least a small number of models on sale. As such, hearing of newcomers on this market segment is not entirely surprising. Among the latest SSDs that have been introduced are the MX DS-Series drives, which were developed by Mach Xtreme, a rather young company based in Taiwan.

As already mentioned, it is not surprising to see newcomers on this market, but it is especially interesting to see new companies making their debut in force. The new SSDs from Mach Xtreme are not just capacious, but even their read and write speeds are significant.

The Series comes in capacities of 50GB, 100GB, 200GB and even 400GB, all the while using the 2.5-inch form factor. All the drives are built with multi-level cell (MLC) NAND Flash memory chips and operate on the SATA 3.0Gbps interface.

As far as data-transfer rates are concerned, the maximum achievable by the MX DS devices is of 250MB/s when reading and 230MB/s when writing. These specifications are already noteworthy, but they are supplemented by a power consumption, when idle, of only 0.5 W. Not only that, but even the drives' endurance is significant, with an MTBF (mean time before failure) estimated at 1.5 million hours.

The drives' prices are not known at this time, but they will likely be the defining factor in how strong a competition the products will be capable of when faced with devices from Corsair, WD, Kingston and other established storage developers. As for product support, Mach Xtreme will provide each drive with a two-year warranty.
