If you’re trying to decide whether or not to use a cleaning utility to declutter your Mac, Ukrainian developer MacPaw has a few things to say that might help your decision.

As we reported a few days ago, there’s a highly-visited thread on Apple Support Communities debating whether or not cleaning utilities are good for your Mac.

MacPaw says its CleanMyMac software is ideal for average users, who don’t want (or don’t know how) to perform Terminal commands. The company says that not only is CleanMyMac useful, it’s also safe.

“I must confess CleanMyMac is not very well welcomed by hardcore Mac users at different Mac communities,” says Philip Struchkov, MacPaw’s marketing manager.

He says there are several reason for that, including the general misconception that Macs don’t require maintenance.

However, Struchkov says, “you do need to perform some cleaning operations from time to time to troubleshoot various problems (like cleaning out caches).”

“Yeah, you can do most of the things via Terminal without CleanMyMac. But we believe that most of the commands are a bit to complex for average users that is why we provide them with simple, clean interface to do all this operations,” Struchkov tells us.

He also notes that cleaning utilities have a bad rap mainly because of low-quality apps. Struchkov refrains from giving out names, but adds, “This just happens. You can find lost of various negative interface all over the web.”

He admits that CleanMyMac customers, while generally satisfied, have been having some problems because they used outdated versions of the app.

“Here at MacPaw we do as much as possible to keep users happy and their systems running smooth and fast. One of the CleanMyMac's hidden feature serving this effort is called Safe Database - the list of rules and exceptions we use during cleaning process,” Struchkov explains.

“We constantly update Safe Database as the new operating systems and apps are released,” he adds. Readers can check out MacPaw’s recent blog post explaining this feature in-depth.

MacPaw firmly believes that CleanMyMac 2 is by far the best cleaning utility money can buy.

“CleanMyMac 2 not only performs system cleaning, but it also does much more like finding big files and folders which wasn't opened for a while, empties all available Trashes, correctly uninstalls apps, helps manage extensions and much more,” Struchkov says.

“Unfortunately most of these features remain forgotten by the community when people advice against using CleanMyMac,” he concludes.
