Enables inertial scrolling and the three-finger drag gesture in recent MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks

Apple’s Downloads area is showing the availability of a certain Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 which includes the required software to use Magic Trackpad, Apple’s all-new input device.

According to Apple, this update installs the three-finger drag gesture and inertial scrolling for Mac laptops, as well as the required Trackpad System Preferences pane for configuring Magic Trackpad on Intel-based Mac desktop systems that support Mac OS X 10.6.4 and later. Over at the Downloads section of its web site, Apple describes Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 as follows:

About Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0

This update adds support to Mac OS X for the Magic Trackpad and is required for its use. It also enables inertial scrolling and the three-finger drag gesture in recent MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks.

Mac OS X 10.6.4 is required before installing this update.

Apple provides additional information on the contents of the update, as well as a link to the Magic Trackpad web site, made available yesterday following the product’s official introduction. Support document HT4254 lists the Mac portables that support inertial scrolling and the three-finger drag gesture applied by the Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0. The systems are:

For inertial scrolling-support after installing Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0, Apple lists the following compatible systems:

Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 will appear in Software Update only after the user pairs their Magic Trackpad. As revealed in Apple's description above, the Mac OS X 10.6.4 update is also a requirement to get users up and running with the new peripheral.

A separate Magic Trackpad update is also available for those running Windows on their Macs via Boot Camp. The Apple Magic Trackpad Update 1.0 for Windows is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit computers.
