Apple has issued two separate EFI firmware updates for MacBook and MacBook Pro users using attached external displays that “occasionally incorrectly show a purple coloration.” The two releases came in tandem with Safari 5.0.3 and Boot Camp Software Update 3.2, so there’s a lot in store (as far as software updates go) for those who own a Mac these days.

Via a note posted to the Downloads area of its web site, Apple reveals the purpose of EFI Firmware Update 2.0 for MacBook and MacBook Pro, saying: “The update resolves an issue where an attached external display may occasionally incorrectly show a purple coloration.”

As noted above, separate versions of the patch are being made available for those who own a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010, polycarbinate model) and for those who own a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010, aluminum enclosure), yet the update’s file size is identical for both computer models -  1.98 MB.

“The MacBook EFI Update will update the EFI firmware on your notebook computer,” Apple explains.

“Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source,” goes an important piece of advice from the Mac makers.

“ When your MacBook restarts, a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update. It will take several minutes for the update to complete. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your MacBook during this update,” Apple concludes.

The EFI Firmware Update 2.0 will only be installed on MacBooks running Mac OS X 10.6.5, the latest version of Snow Leopard.

Although not documented in the official release notes, a patch in Mac OS X 10.6.5 addresses a screen-flickering issue on new-generation MacBook Air systems, Softpedia recently learned (more details here).
