Speaking of Apple’s newly updated MacBook , the tech-savvy people at iFixit couldn’t resist the urge of acquiring the polycarbonate, unibody-design Mac laptop and pry it open to see what was new, and what stayed the same.

As already revealed by Apple, the updated MacBook model not only includes better NVIDIA graphics and a faster processor, but also a longer lasting battery, which the company now builds inside every one of its laptop computers. This is actually the first of many notable observations in iFixit’s “MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Mid 2010 Teardown.”

“We wanted to see what's inside Apple's updated MacBook!” its report begins. “This machine bears the exact same model number ‘A1342’, but includes a longer-lasting battery and the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor. We got this unit from the Apple Store on May 19th, 2010.” Highlights from its report can be found below.

According to iFixit, the new battery looks very similar to the previous one. In fact, iFixit claims it’s so similar to it that they are identical in size and shape, and have the same model number (A1331). However, the battery in the A1342 Mid 2010 is of 65 watt-hours and weighs 355 grams. By contrast, the earlier A1342 has a battery of 60 watt-hours and weighs 347.5 grams, the repair shop says.

The Bluetooth model number is BCM943224PCIEBT - the same card used in the previous model, the A1342, iFixit further notes. As far as the optical unit is concerned, “You'll be glad to know that MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Mid 2010 continues to use the 8x SATA superdrive manufactured by Panasonic, model UJ898,” the report reads.

Once the MacBook’s logic board was freed from the chassis, the following observations could be made:

- Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Processor E006B705 SLDGZ AV80577P8600 2.40/3M/1066; - NVIDIA GeForce 320M integrated chipset graphics card: The successor to the GeForce 9400M; - Realtek RTL8251CA GigE Ethernet; - CYPRESS CY8C24 16 KB Flash PSoC; - TDK 6T213HF; - Cirrus Logic 4206ACNZ.

iFixit adds that Apple continues to do well on its promise of reducing environmental impact, as “the LED-backlit display in the MacBook A1342 and Mid A1342 are Mercury-free.” After showing “the final layout of what used to be a MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Mid 2010,” the company reveals to its fans that a guide to replacing the LED-backlit display is on its way soon.
