As of today, Apple is selling refurbished MacBook Air computers for as low as $699, a record price drop for the ultra-thin laptops sold through the Special Deals of the company’s online store.

Saving the buyer $200 the $699 Refurbished MacBook Air 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo originally released October 2010 comes with an 11.6-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display, 2GB of standard memory, 64GB flash storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, and the new built-in FaceTime camera.

Priced a tad higher at $899 but still saving customers $200 on their purchase is a slightly higher specced version with double the storage capacity - 128GB NAND Flash. The processor speed and RAM are the same, as is the graphics card.

But we’re yet to mention an even more attractive offer.

Retailing for $949 and saving buyers $250 (20% off) is a Refurbished MacBook Air 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo also released last year, in October.

It has a speed bumped 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 13.3-inches of LED-backlit glossy widescreen display goodness, 2GB memory, 128GB flash storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, and the ever present FaceTime camera.

Whichever MacBook Air configuration you were aiming for, it seems Apple has everyone covered.

Oh and, those of you who are considering a purchase better hurry up and place your order, because refurbs as cheap as these usually fly off the shelf before we can even post the news.

It should be noted that not even Apple’s (now-discontinued) White MacBook ever saw its price drop as low as $699.

Apple must be selling so many of the new Thunderbolt MacBook Airs that remaining stock of the previous generation models has become a burden.

There’s talk of blazing fast MacBook Airs coming in 2012. If this is correct, Apple is probably preparing to tap its suppliers for the next order.

In the meanwhile, this autumn may also bring refreshed MacBook Pros with the newest Core i7 processors from Intel, according to similar reports.
