Developed by Jeff Wolverton, the SkyWriting app originally released for Apple’s iPad is now available on the Mac App Store. The destkop program boasts additional features, such as keyboard typing.

Wolverton released his SkyWriting app advertising it as a tool that helps simulate writing with smoke in the sky.

Writing can be done over various backgrounds, such as well-known city skylines, palm tree lined beaches, and famous landmarks.

The smoke realistically drifts away in real time so as to appear like real-life skywriting, according to Jeff.

In some cases, smoke stays behind the foreground features of the image, such as buildings.

A popular app on the iPad, SkyWriting has been featured by Apple in their "New & Noteworthy" section during the month of July 2010.

At one time, the app took the 11th spot in entertainment apps in the U.S.

In addition to the features of the iOS version, the Mac version of SkyWriting brings a host enhancements, including an updated smoke algorithm, and the ability to type to write, instead of using the mouse cursor.

“Simply click where you want the words and start hitting keys on the keyboard!” Jeff Wolverton explains. “They'll be written instantly in the sky and start wafting just like you drew them!”

“Upper and lower case letters, numbers, symbols, anything! Change the smoke size slider for larger or smaller letters. Now you can write volumes in the sky if you want!!" Wolverton jokes.

Responsible for the physics and look of the sky writing smoke is Hollywood visual effects artist Jeff Wolverton, who has worked as a digital FX artist in over 20 feature films, according to the makers of the app.

SkyWriting for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.6.6, and 12 MB of free disk space.

SkyWriting 1.0 is immediately available through the Apple Mac App Store for $1.99.

As a Mac App Store exclusive on the Macintosh platform, the software cannot be tested in trial / demo mode.
