Apple denies these claims, but continues investigation into the matter

A French newspaper’s claim that Mac Pros are emitting toxic odors, including benzene, has been dismissed by Apple. Spokesman Bill Evans has told Macworld that, while the company is still investigating these allegations, there is no indication so far that Mac Pros emit toxic fumes.

According to MacRumors, a scientist quoted in the article went as far as saying that the odor contained benzene, among other toxins. The scientist did not refer to this saying there was “indication” of such toxins, or that benzene was “presumably” the source of the smell, but quite matter-of-factly said it, “benzene.” He added that prolonged exposure to this substance raised the risk of cancer. Like there's anything that doesn't lead to cancer these days.

Whether or not these observations are true, numerous Apple Discussions posters appear to be backing up the story.

“Does anyone notice a musty smell with the new Mac Pros?,” asks thread starter coogie2. “I recently purchased the new 8-core and it emits a very musty odor when powered up. My entire room soon smells bad and I have had to resort to a few air fresheners just to be able to work on it. I thought it might have something to do with it coming from China but we also purchased a 2.66 GHZ MAc Pro, that was assembled in CA, at work and it smells the same. I removed the side cover while it was running and the smell is most noticable [sic] in the front fan area,” the poster explains.

Another user is of the same opinion, saying “the best comparison I can make is if you would pour water on your carpet in the middle of the summer and let it go for a few days. That musty, mildewey smell.” So, while the issue hasn't been declared widespread, it does have certain “musty” similarities among Mac Pro users.

But, as noted above, Apple cannot put its finger on the matter just yet - “We have not found anything that supports this claim, but continue to investigate it for the customer,” Apple spokesman Bill Evans said.

Any Mac Pro owners around? How's your experience with it?
