Apple pundit John Gruber weighs in on Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference for this year, revealing a few interesting matters, including details on Mac OS X 10.7. The blogger offers his take on Apple’s obsession with the iOS recently, claiming it’s just a phase the company is going through right now.
Describing WWDC10 as a very tightly focused conference, like none before it, Gruber
asserts that never did WWDC feel like this, even when the conference was all about Mac OS X development. A possible reason is that programming for the Mac encompasses more different things compared with the iOS development, he claims. Indeed, it seems that way, since Apple had to put Mac OS X almost completely aside for this year’s event.
Nevertheless, a few Mac OS X 10.7 tidbits did manage to get through the fine net of the WWDC10 sessions, the pundit points out. He says that wee bits of 10.7-related information were offered in the sessions, but also in the iOS 4 SDK frameworks, specifically mentioning the AV Foundation. According to Gruber’s findings, 10.7 development is clearly underway. He notes that several rumors he’s heard indicate the software is “picking up steam.”
Throughout his WWDC10 wrap-up post, the pundit shows a clear optimism regarding Apple’s choice to direct more resources towards iOS development for now, saying that the tight focus of the conference was, in his opinion, a reflection of Apple’s current focus. In fact, Apple itself said the iPhone 4 was the biggest leap from the original handset, so it’s pretty obvious now that WWDC10 was the moment to shine for iOS 4. The event could only cover all new additions and, implicitly, the new functionality they enabled, by focusing everyone’s attention on this next big thing coming out of Cupertino.
Apple surprised everyone this year making the
WWDC10 video sessions available for free to all those who had an Apple developer account, including free accounts. Previously, developers had to pay at least $500 for access to these valuable resources.
