For those who haven’t yet updated to the latest incremental update for Snow Leopard, perhaps it is worth noting that some users are experiencing serious issues after installing the new software, particularly in tandem with version 10.2.1 of iTunes.

An Apple Discussions thread titled “10.6.7 Freezes when attempting to run iTunes 10.2.1” reveals that Apple has a serious bug on its hands.

MacBook Air user Leslie Bonney writes, “I have just updated to 10.6.7 all Apps (e.g. Mail, Safari, Parallels) tried so far work fine except iTunes.”

“Every time I run iTunes 10.2.1 I get as far as the window displaying correctly then within 20secs the machine freezes and is unresponsive to anything other than a forced shutdown via the power button.”

“I have fixed disk permissions with the same result,” Bonney notes.

Multiple Mac users chime in to report the exact same issue.

“Same problem here,” writes hstahlmann. “My MBA freezes a few seconds after starting iTunes.”

One of the discussioners appears to have found a workaround already, as those who’ve tried it themselves reported success in running Mac OS X 10.6.7 and iTunes 10.2.1 without a hiccup.

A manual restart apparently does the trick. More precisely, the second restart fixes the problem, but iTunes must not be launched in between these two reboot attempts.

As such, the steps are: restart after installing 10.6.7 -> wait for the system to load completely and do not run iTunes -> restart again.

Those affected by the issue also seem to have the same computer - Macbook Air (late 2010) - albeit different configurations (CPU, RAM, storage).

“Same MacBook Air config - same issue upon first updating - but the second restart also fixed the issue for me,” Apple forum user aviya writes.

How has your system been holding up after the 10.6.7 update? Let us know in the comments.
