Alongside the three new firmware updates posted yesterday for Macs experiencing SuperDrive issues, Apple has issued an AirPort Client Update, the second for this year, fixing several issues on systems running the latest version of Snow Leopard.

AirPort is Apple’s local area wireless networking product based on the IEEE 802.11 standard (also known as Wi-Fi). AirPort and AirPort Extreme can refer to the protocol (802.11b, and 802.11g and 802.11 Draft-N, respectively), the expansion card or the base station, in common usage. On the Downloads section of its website, Apple describes the AirPort Client Update 2009-002 as follows:

About AirPort Client Update 2009-002

This update is recommended for all Macintosh computers running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and includes fixes for the following:

- Inability to turn AirPort on or off in some cases after upgrading from Mac OS X Leopard;
- An occasional loss of network connection when using Wake on Demand;
- Inability to create a computer-to-computer network, or share the Internet connection on some MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers.

Posted on December 8th, AirPort Client Update 2009-002 weighs roughly 13MB and can only be applied on Mac OS X 10.6.2, the newest version of Apple’s Snow Leopard currently available to the public. In a rather unusual move, Apple has added support for pretty much every language on Earth in AirPort Client Update 2009-002. Supported tongues include (but are not limited to) Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Arabic, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Slovak, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Mac users can either use their systems’ built-in Software Update mechanism (Apple Menu > Software Update) to check for any available updates, or they can immediately download the AirPort update using the link below to apply the new software themselves.

Airport still BUGGY! This update did NOT fix a problem that I have had ever since upgrading my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard from Tiger. Basically, I can't transfer any files over about a few Kb (>500Kb) across to my partner's MacPro (also upgraded to Snow Leopard) over our Airport link. Never had any such problems all the time when we were with Tiger! Very disappointing given all the hype about Snow Leopard.

Don't install 2009-002 if you have no wifi problems. My new MB with 10.6.0 upgraded to 10.6.2 broke after this. I had no problems, but now intermittently losing wifi connection. Even toggling wifi off and on sometimes does not fix it.

Sort of the same here: On cold startup an airport connection is near impossible to setup, once it's up however, it stays up. As a result I'm constantly keeping my iMac 27" running to spare myself the airport shuffle every morning. In comparison my old 24" never had this problem (only after switching to 10.6.0 the subsequent updates from apple rendered the airport as stable as it should be).

Searching the web I found no solutions thus far.
