Along with the unexpectedly fast release of OS X 10.5.4, Apple also issued the maintenance and security update for Server users of the OS. The update includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for some areas.

"The latest release of Apple's UNIX server operating system makes it easy for small businesses, workgroups, and enterprises to take full advantage of the benefits of a server," Apple says. "With Mac OS X Server, users can effortlessly share files, schedule meetings and events, exchange instant messages, send and receive mail on the Internet, access the organization's network remotely, publish podcasts, and host websites, wikis, and blogs."

As noted above, the Mac OS X 10.5.4 Server Update is recommended for all servers currently running Leopard Server. The update includes both general operating system fixes and specific fixes for: directory service reliability and authentication; ensuring security of LDAP password hashes; creating mobile accounts. The Mac OS X 10.5.4 Server Update is available as a free download HERE.

The update can be installed on non-startup volumes, but you should only do this if the current startup volume has already been updated to Mac OS X Server version 10.5.4. To avoid issues caused by an improper installation, simply start up from the volume that you wish to update. Also, note that you must use version 10.5.3 or later of the Mac OS X Server Admin Tools to administer a server running 10.5.4. The 10.5.4 version of the Admin Tools is included in the Mac OS X Server 10.5.4 Update, while the tools are also available from Apple Support Downloads.

If you wish to make sure you're not skipping other major updates, since 10.5.4 Server isn't the only one made available recently, you can use Apple's Software Update mechanism (Apple Menu -> Software Update) and choose the updates to be performed.
