Aspyr Media has announced plans to drop development for Mac OS X version 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, once Apple rolls out its upcoming OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

All future releases of Aspyr games, including patches and updates for existing titles, “will no longer work on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard),” according to a memo from Aspyr Media, the biggest Mac games publisher on the market.

“To continue to play the latest Mac games, we recommend upgrading your computer or operating system to the latest version of OS X,” says the company.

Aspyr goes through the motions and justifies its decision saying that each new OS upgrade comes with certain particularities that translate into the need to re-shift development resources. More importantly, Snow Leopard is slowly dying.

“Currently 8% of our existing audience is on Mac OS X 10.6, down from 16% in January. With the release of Mavericks we anticipate this reducing further, and therefore we believe our efforts should be focused on supporting the growing audience,” Aspyr notes.

The first games from Aspyr that will no longer support Snow Leopard are Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Call of Duty.

Aspyr is also working on some updates for these games to provide compatibility with OS X Mavericks.
