Mac sales sure to have made a bigger difference this year

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, available for Mac and PC, has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion for Blizzard's hugely popular MMORPG, arrived in stores on November 13, in North America, Europe, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Russia.

On November 14, gamers in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand also got their chance to grab the new expansion. Wrath of the Lich King became available in Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on November 18.

It would be interesting to see how many Mac gamers accounted for these figures, given that Mac sales steadily grow with every year, as does Mac gaming, which (by the way) Apple is beginning to embrace. For the time being, Blizzard doesn't offer statistics that say exactly how many WoW Mac gamers are out there, but a rough estimate would be 10 to 15 percent, considering Apple's market share in the computer segment.

"After a single day of availability, Wrath of the Lich King is already the bestselling PC game of 2008 at GameStop, and ranks as one of our top-selling products so far this year," said Bob McKenzie, GameStop’s senior vice president of merchandising. "In keeping with the tradition established by their previous releases, Blizzard Entertainment has again created a product that not only reflects their high standards of quality, but is clearly an instant hit with gamers around the country."

Mac owners and fans of World of Warcraft can get Wrath of the Lich King on DVD-ROM, in two packages: a standard edition, priced at US$39.99, and a special Collector’s Edition (available only in select regions), going for US$69.99. The entire soundtrack album of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is also available to buy through the iTunes Store. The iTunes edition of the soundtrack contains a total of 21 tracks, including three exclusives - "Path of the Lifewarden," "Shadow Web Caverns," and "Obsidian Sanctum."
