Most consumers don't even bother to look for advanced security features when buying a flash drive, except for those that are especially concerned with their privacy or keeping their ideas away from those that would exploit them. When it comes to the Government, however, advanced encryption protocols and special technologies are a must. MXI Security proudly announced that it had developed a device that supposedly meets all the requirements for classifying as government-grade, with the biggest asset being its CAPS certification.

CAPS is the official certification issued by CESG, UK’s National Technical Authority for Information Assurance, to those units that satisfy a certain set of criteria. Mostly, CAPS is meant to allow private sector companies to develop cryptographic products for use by Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) and other appropriate organizations. As for what the unit is actually capable of, it merges not just high physical reliability, but virtual safety measures as well.

For one, the Stealth M600, as it is called, boasts the Butterfly Portable Security Processor. This is the world's first, or so MXI claims, dedicated hardware security processor for USB drives and combats all forms of malware. This chips already got US Government FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation. Also, unless it is unlocked by the legitimate owner, the flash drive will not work. Mostly, the product should assist Government users avoid drawing the ire of the UK parliament and its Data protection Act. Oddly enough, however, storage capacities have not been mentioned yet.

“In order to address the growing concern of losing critical data, governments world-wide are implementing stringent rules and regulations with severe penalties in aim to prevent the loss or theft of data when a portable storage device is lost. For example, the UK Parliament recently imposed new penalties for infringements of the Data Protection Act (DPA), which will force organizations to pay up to £500,000 in fines for serious breaches of the DPA,” the press release explains.

“Having MXI Security receive CAPS certification signifies that the UK Government understands the importance of securing data while maintaining portability. Government agencies and organizations now have access to technology that provides a totally secure way of protecting their most sensitive data.” says Reusing.
