The Android-based handset will arrive in the second quarter of the year

Sony’s Xperia family of devices has just got expanded with new handsets that got unveiled to the world at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Among them, we can count the Sony Xperia P, a handset that was included in the company’s new Xperia NXT series.

The smartphone arrives on shelves with looks similar to those of Xperia S before it, but with different hardware specifications.

However, the new mobile phone will still offer a great mobile experience to all users, the same as other smartphones in the lineup would. The Xperia P will be launched in Silver, Red and Black flavors.

“Like all phones in the Xperia NXT series, it has a simple, strong design language. And Xperia P takes it one step further – the precision crafted, full aluminium unibody gives this Android phone a unique, durable and modern look,” Sony notes.

The mobile phone arrives on shelves with a 4-inch scratch-resistant TFT touchscreen display that can deliver support for 16 million colors, along with a 960 x 540 pixels resolution.

It is powered by a 1 GHz U8500 Dual Core application processor and runs under Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, but will get a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the second quarter of the year.

Sony Xperia P arrives on shelves with an 8-megapixel photo snapper with auto focus, 8x digital zoom, and LED flash and full HD video recording. The specs list of this device also includes NFC capabilities, with support for Sony’s SmartTags, as well as 3G and WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS receiver, and the like.

It measures 122 x 59.5 x 10.5 mm (4.8 x 2.3 x 0.4 inches) and weighs 120 grams (4.2 ounces). The phone’s battery can deliver up to 6 hours of talk time, or up to 475 hours of standby time.

The mobile phone will include 1 GB of RAM to complement the capabilities of its fast CPU, along with 16 GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of external storage.

The handset lands on shelves with support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies, as well as with UMTS/HSPA 900/1900/2100 support.
