ROUTE 66, a well-known company focusing on mobile mapping and navigation solutions for smartphones and tablets, has announced during the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the launch of ROUTE 66 Maps + Navigation.

The new navigation app for Android devices is based on the developer's TomTom solution and includes highly accurate maps and enhanced location content.

According to the company, ROUTE 66 Maps + Navigation is the first application based on the global agreement between ROUTE 66 and TomTom announced at the end of 2010.

We are extremely pleased to provide a critical component in this compelling new ROUTE 66 application,” said Maarten van Gool, managing director, TomTom Licensing.

Our maps rate very highly in terms of quality and reliability, and are updated daily via millions of GPS system users worldwide, who help to track and validate changes in real time,” added van Gool.

The navigation application targets drivers and pedestrians around the globe and provides them with access to the latest maps for over 100 countries using 3D graphics.

In addition, useful links with interesting information like the weather and Wikipedia are also offered within the application.

Users will be able to explore maps with multi-touch gestures for zooming, moving, tilting and rotating the view, while navigating.

Furthermore, ROUTE 66 Maps + Navigation includes voice navigation directions in 57 languages, as well as optional Real Time Traffic and Speed Camera services and a number of unique extras, including the Follow Me augmented reality feature.

The Follow Me feature shows a video feed of the street in front of the user by taking advantage of the device's camera. It also adds a virtual 3D car driving in the front.

Instead of voice navigation, users get indicator lights which flash  when they should  turn left or right.

ROUTE 66 Maps + Navigation will soon be available via Android Market and  will offer lifetime free access to maps. It  is compatible with all devices running Android OS 2.1 and later.

Turn-by-turn navigation is a premium feature, which can be purchased via the in-app store.
