The network for young people and pop culture in general is currently having to deal with a scandal involving its upcoming awards show to celebrate the most successful films of the year.

After last week the nominations were announced for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, fans are now in uproar that Jennifer Lawrence's character from “The Hunger Games” did not make the cut in the “Best Hero” category.

The unusual awards show which features brand new, funny and weird categories, has managed to upset die-hard “Hunger Games” fans when it overlooked Katniss Everdeen, a character played by Jennifer Lawrence in the young adult hit film, as a nomination in the “Best Hero” category.

At the moment, the nominees in that category are Henry Cavill for his role of Superman in “Man of Steel,” Robert Downey Jr. for his role in “Iron Man 3,” Martin Freeman for his role of Bilbo Baggings in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” Chris Hemsworth as Thor in “Thor: The Dark World” and Channing Tatum as John Cale in “White House Down.”

As you can see, all the nominees happen to be men, and fans are asking for a female choice, especially since they feel that this year, this category has been well represented by Katniss Everdeen, the feisty teen who goes up against an entire dominating government in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world.

There is a petition online on Care2 which asks that this unpardonable mistake be rectified forthwith, and there are already over 10,000 digital signatures collected, proving that there are other people out there who think the same.

According to the petition, “There is not a single woman in the Hero’s (sic) category. Don’t let a strong woman like Katniss be overlooked! Young women already have too few female heroes represented in film and television. We’re constantly shown by the entertainment industry that men are brave, powerful, or successful, while women are often given supporting roles and weak characters.”

Other fans of the series or just people who advocate for women equality in movies can add their name to the signature list until April 13, when the MTV Movie Awards are set to air.

Jennifer Lawrence, who has managed to rake up many nominations and awards this year wasn't overlooked entirely by MTV, that chose to list her among the nominations for Best Female Performance for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and for Best Fight also for the role in the same movie.

More controversially, she's also been nominated for Best Kiss for the incendiary on-screen lip-lock scene she had with Amy Adams in the film “American Hustle.” And still, all fans wanted was for Katniss Everdeen to be listed among the year's best heroes and superheroes.
