They are not the Oscars because they stand not for what critics like, but for what audiences love. The MTV Movie Awards will take place on June 6 and they will mark the event that confirms the hottest films, actors and directors in terms of appeal to the general public. Nominees for this year’s edition have just been announced so fans should get started with the voting process.

Starting with the biggest award there is, that for Best Movie, the nominations see the biggest productions of the year in a tight race for the finish. On the bright side, voting for this particular category will be open throughout the live MTV awards ceremony. Noms include James Cameron’s “Avatar,” the second “Twilight” film “New Moon,” Tim Burton’s take on “Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and the best comedy of 2009, “The Hangover.”

The Best Actress category also brings some surprises, as it sees Oscar winning Sandra Bullock pitted against Kristen Stewart, even though Sandy is in the running with the same film that also got her the Oscar, namely “The Blind Side.” Also nominated are Emma Watson for “Harry Potter,” Amanda Seyfried for “Dear John” and Zoe Saldana for “Avatar.” Best Actor sees Robert Pattinson compete against Taylor Lautner for their parts in “New Moon,” Zac Efron, Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum.

“New Moon” also gets a nod in the Best Kiss category, with Pattinson and Stewart nominated for their smooches in the second installment in the franchise. Kristen is also nominated for her kiss with Dakota Fanning in “The Runaways,” so she’s basically competing against herself in this category. In the Global Superstar category, though, Kristen is in the running for the award against Pattinson himself. Other nominees are Johnny Depp, Daniel Radcliffe and Taylor Lautner.

Below is the complete list of nominees. Go to MTV to vote for your favorite and keep an eye here (and on MTV) for more on the awards ceremony.
