MTV is currently the producer and carrier of two of the biggest reality shows of the moment, both of which focus on teen pregnancy: “Teen Mom” and “16 and Pregnant.” For the latter, it aired a special on abortions, called “No Easy Decision.”
The stand-alone, one-time episode aired the other night but, even before that, it managed to get a lot of people upset for what they believed was a glorification of abortion in teens.
The episode centered on Markai Durham and James, whom audiences may already know from season 2 of the show, coming to the decision and dealing with the consequences of aborting their second baby.
Markai gave birth to her first child, a baby girl, in 2009 and now, because of financial constraints and the desire to offer the best to her daughter, she’s decided to abort the second.
In the television special, she explains that she only got pregnant because she was late on getting her birth control shot, the reasons she decided to terminate the pregnancy and hope God will allow her to have another one when she’s better off, and why she doesn’t believe she did anything wrong by choosing this.
Pro-life groups are already up in arms over the episode, the
NY Post informs, as they believe MTV is only showing one side of the much-debated topic.
Moreover, the show is done in cooperation with pro-choice group Exhale, which offers counseling and guidance to young women and young mothers who choose to terminate a pregnancy.
That must mean MTV is biased on the topic of teen abortion from the start, pro-life groups are saying on dedicated online forums.
At the same time, feminists and some
media representatives argue the television special is a step forward in the right direction, with MTV being the first network to tackle this issue in a documentary,
The Frisky writes.
Besides adoption and raising the baby, there’s also a third option for (teen) moms, and that’s abortion, they say. It’s probably the most painful experience in a woman’s life but, sometimes, it can also be the only right one.
