Opera has just announced the signing of an agreement with wireless carrier MTN for the delivery of a faster, more appealing Internet browsing for mobile phone users in Nigeria.

Over 40 million MTN customers will be able to enjoy the improved Internet navigation on their devices courtesy of Opera Mini, the duo announced.

Users will be offered with an affordable web experience, as well as with one-click access to MTN’s Play entertainment portal, and with fast access to any website.

Through Opera Mini, users will benefit not only from a faster Internet connectivity on their mobile phones, but will also enjoy important price cuts, courtesy of the compression technology the mobile browser was packed with.

The application was designed so as to compress web pages by up to 90 percent before sending them to the handset, which should also result in reduced network usage.

“MTN as a whole has seen the value of Opera Mini and we are introducing it in all the 21 countries we operate in,” said Bola Akingbade, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria.

“We believe that communication and participation empowers people. By working with Opera, we deliver greater value to our customers, with a faster browsing experience, lowering the barriers to spending time online.”

Opera Mini is said to be the most popular mobile browser in the world, with over 100 million users. The application offers support for more than 3,000 different mobile phone models, and is available on major mobile OSes out there.

The mobile browser was packed with a series of features that are available for the users of Opera on their desktop PCs, such as tabbed browsing, password manager and speed dial.

“Our goal has always been to offer the full Web to our users — no matter the device. Over the past few years, we have observed the explosion of mobile web usage across Africa. MTN has been leading the way, with its strong customer focus and innovative solutions,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software.

“The further growth of the mobile Web depends on our joint ability to understand and enhance the user experience. We look forward to working closely with MTN Nigeria to ensure a large and happy user base.”

Opera Mini users on the MTN network in Nigeria will automatically receive the new flavor of the browser when launching Opera Mini next. The customized app is also available for download from m.opera.com.
