Microsoft admitted Thursday that hackers have booby-trapped the Korean MSN site to steal the users' personal information. Fearing the worst, Microsoft started to investigate what kind of private content the hackers managed to get their hands on.
The results are somewhat hilarious. Although they could have wreaked havoc on MSN's Korean portal, the hackers targeted the
passwords to game accounts.
"But their target - passwords to game accounts - lessened the significance of the break-in since the hacker software appeared not to collect any network or banking passwords.", says Associated Press.
The game in question is Lineage, a popular game in Asia with 4 million subscribers, for which players pay $15 each
month.
Regarding the success of the hackers' attack, a MSN official said: "Microsoft is not currently aware of any customer impact as a result of this criminal activity, but will continue to investigate the incident and take any necessary action to help protect customers. Microsoft is cooperating with law enforcement to investigate and take appropriate legal action against those responsible."
MSN was lucky this time because the attackers were after gaming passwords, just think what would have happened if hackers targeted banking or network accounts.
