Large enough to fit the keyboard, mouse and monitor

Most mousepads are only big enough to accommodate your hand and the mouse, but there are some that are specifically designed for people who like to have half of their tabletop or desktop covered. And then there are things like this.

MSI has just introduced the Xield5 gaming mousepad, which is large enough to cover not just half but the entirety of a desk or table.

Shaped like a very wide trapeze, the mousepad measures 760 x 560 mm / 30 x 22.04 inches and weighs 730 grams / 1.60 pounds.

No matter how you look at it, that's a big and heavy piece of work. Heavy being the more important term there. The thing is heavier than most tablets.

The main features of the Xield5

Other than the familiar dragon logo, there isn't much to squeal over, although it bears noting that the product somehow weighs what it weighs despite the thickness being of only 5 mm.

On the other hand, most mousepads aren't thicker than 3 mm, and some get away with 2 depending on what material they're made of, and whether or not they bother with a rubber underside.

So you could say that the new mousepad is definitely one of the best you're likely to find, even though you could probably let it pass as a doormat.

Speaking of which, calling it a “mouse” pad might not be all that correct either, given just how little of its surface will ever actually see the mouse coasting over it.

A case could be made for it being a table “cloth” or second surface that also happens to double as a mousepad. And laptop pad given the press photo.

Sadly, Micro-Star International did not say when sales would begin, or for what price the product would change hands.

Given the use of nature bamboo-rubber as the filler, you can be sure that the price would be high even without it being so absurdly large. Hopefully the logo on the surface won't fade too quickly.
