Microsoft has decided to offer IT administrators a blocker which enables them to choose whether to install Service Pack on Windows Server 2003 or not.
The program will be available for download on Microsoft's site starting with July 26 and will block SP1 until March 30 2006. After that, installing Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2003 will become compulsory.
The
advantage of this program is that administrators will be able to choose when to install Windows 2003 Server SP1 without having to deactivate the Automatic Updates feature.
Microsoft has decided to offer a blocker for Windows XP SP2 as well, but there is no comparison between it and the one for Windows Server 2003. The changes proposed by Windows Server 2003 go deep and even modify the very core of the operating system.
That is why many administrators prefer not to install this Service Pack, even though there haven't been any reports of incompatibilities with other applications.
Microsoft has announced that testing the blocker is not necessary, the blocking mechanism consisting only in changing a registry key.
What's really important is that Microsoft has taken into account its clients' opinions and developed this blocker, giving companies the chance to test Windows Server 2003 SP1 before installing it.
